New Year new you challenge shows how small changes produce big results

Personnel from across HMS Sultan demonstrated recently how making small changes to your lifestyle choices can have a big impact, as they took part in the Establishment’s New Year New You Challenge.

A total of 28 Service and civilian personnel took to the scales for the 10 week Challenge which measured their overall body fat as a percentage, the visceral fat surrounding the internal organs and participants’ resting metabolisms (the amount of energy required to fulfil basic bodily functions).

Individual training programs were designed around personal goals, with many of those participating taking advantage of the nutritional advice available in order to shake off the excess from the festive season.

With the Challenge consisting of three separate weigh-ins from start to finish, not everyone who benefitted from the Challenge was able to complete it, however a combined total of 46.7KG was lost by the 16 successful finishers. 

The winning male was Mr Richard Thompson losing 8.5kg and the winning female was CPO Catherine House who lost 5kg.

Leading Physical Trainer Rob Docker said: “Well done to everyone who participated in this year’s challenge.

"Hopefully no matter how successful they have been, they will all have gained some knowledge and understanding of what a healthier lifestyle entails.”

“Hopefully this will inspire those involved to think even more deeply about how further changes could have an even greater impact.”

“Although this year’s Challenge has finished, the scales remain accessible and every one of the Physical Training staff are here to offer support and advice.”

Miss Sophie Bailey, from Executive Health based at HMS Temeraire who presented the awards said: “It was very rewarding for me to come over to HMS Sultan and see the amazing work that the PT Department have been involved in to increase the health and wellbeing of personnel.

“It was good to see a mixture of military, civilians, ranks and rates taking part in the initiative and to hear the achievements that were made.”
