Personnel from HMS Sultan recently visited their near neighbours at Brune Park Community School, to talk about Engineering within the Royal Navy (RN) as part of the School’s Raising Aspirations program during British Science Week.
Students got to hear all about engineering training within HMS Sultan, the three different branches of Air, Marine and Weapons Engineering within the RN and the importance of the many roles the Service fulfils, both at home and around the World.
A key aim of the presentation was to help the students understand how Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) is being used within industry and the children got to learn about ships, submarines and aircraft within the RN.
In addition, the students got to learn about how the Establishment is preparing for the arrival of the Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers.
Ella (13) said: “When I leave school I want to join the Navy.
“The presentation helped me to get a really good insight into engineering and technologies in the Navy.
“I particularly liked some of the great opportunities and careers choices.”
Ben (12) said: “I was very interested when Commander Mark Hamilton came to Brune Park because I am already in Royal Navy Cadets and this has inspired me to join the Navy even more.
“There was also lots of very interesting information about the history of the Royal Navy.”
Innovation and Development Manager for Brune Park Community School, Stephen Shaw said: “The visit from Sultan is part of a series of talks and activities designed to challenge and raise the aspirations of our students with a real life context.”
HMS Sultan Executive Officer, Commander Mark Hamilton who led the team of presenters said: “We are delighted to have been able to speak to the students.
“Many of those attending the presentation will travel past HMS Sultan every day and hopefully it has given them an idea of some of the exciting training which is happening on their doorstep.”
“The children are at a stage in their personal development where there are so many engineering opportunities open to them.
“As a Marine Engineer myself, I hope my fellow presenters and I have been able to inspire the students to pursue an exciting career within engineering.”
Brune Park Community School recently took special delivery of a project table for their LEGO Education Innovation Studio which was purchased thanks to a donation from the money raised for good causes at the HMS Sultan Summer Show.
The Studio provides children and young people across the local area with an interactive facility for hands-on experimentation within STEM.
