Devonport sailors’ multi-media suite opens

The Royal Navy has opened a new multi-media entertainment centre in the junior sailors’ accommodation block.

The centre was launched by the Captain of the Base Colonel Simon Chapman who encouraged sailors to use it: “When I joined the Navy 30 years ago there was nothing like this form of entertainment in any of the messes or wardrooms.

“However, this was introduced in theatres abroad like Afghanistan and is now happening in the UK and I’m pleased to open this state-of-the art multi-media centre.

“I’d encourage all to use it otherwise there’s a natural tendancy to retire to your cabins.

“But here’s a chance to share a common interest and socialise and show comradeship.’’

Leading Seaman Stuart Mackenzie said: “There was a consensus that this room needed using, it was a disused snooker room.

“The junior rates have also been behind this and have a committee which was consulted all the way.

“It will also act as a great meeting place.  Sailors need to continue the team work ashore they create at sea
