Australian delegation visits BRNC

A delegation from the Royal Australian Navy has visited Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC) to compare the training programmes used to develop Navy leaders of the future.

Captain (Capt) Charles Huxtable, the Commanding Officer of HMAS Cresswell, the Royal Australian Naval College, and Capt Shane Craig, the Australian Defence Advisor, spent an afternoon at BRNC where they were given an insight into the 29-week initial naval training course for Officers.

The two visitors were invited to tour the College to see the extensive facilities available for training. 

They were shown around the Bridge Simulator used primarily to teach navigation. 

The state-of-the-art computer system provides a realistic environment for learning and can simulate varying sea-states and locations all over the world.

Capt Huxtable and Capt Craig also visited Sandquay, BRNC’s training area on the River Dart, to see how maritime training is delivered.

Capt Craig said:  “The Royal Navy and Royal Australian Navy share a long and extremely close history and the sharing of experiences allows each organisation to continually evolve in meeting future challenges.

“The Australian delegation found the discussions with the Royal Navy extremely useful.  With the recent decision of the Royal Australian Navy to procure the British designed Type 26 Frigate, these opportunities will continue to grow into the future.”
