Marine Engineers help out at Alverstoke Infant School

Marine Engineers from HMS Sultan went out into the local community recently, making a significant difference to the children’s gardens at Alverstoke Infant School.

A group of six trainees from the Defence College of Technical Training’s Defence School of Marine Engineering (DSMarE) spent several days helping to enhance learning by clearing a woody walk, re-felting sheds and painting.

Leading Engineering Technician (Marine Engineering Submariner) Connor Richardson said: “We just came down to assist in any way we could.

It’s been good to be out representing the Base in the local community. It’s great to volunteer and it makes a change from our normal training.”

Headteacher Steph Greenwood said: “This group are doing some fantastic work for us, something we wouldn’t be able to do ourselves. We have a lot of outdoor learning and what the children can’t do now is access all of the woody area, which needed cutting back.

The children are watching everything, knowing that next time they do an outdoor learning day they will be able to go in to the woods properly and be safe to play in there.

About 20% of our children come from uniformed families, so to see people coming in to school in uniform and know they are from the Navy is quite a personal touch for the school.”
