HMS Tyne open to visitors in Newcastle for Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

Royal Navy warship HMS Tyne will visit Newcastle for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend – and will be open to visitors.

The patrol ship will berth in the heart of Newcastle at Spillers Wharf – after sailing her namesake River Tyne for the first time in ten years – for five days from the evening of Tuesday 31 May.

The public can visit the ship (from 9am on both days) all day on Friday June 3 and in the morning on Saturday June 4, without the need to book tickets.

Affiliated with Tynemouth, the offshore patrol ship will take a brief pause in her operations, which sees her protect fishing stocks and carry out security operations in waters close to the UK.

HMS Tyne’s Navigating Officer Lieutenant Andrew Hume, said: “It will be an honour to join Her Majesty’s celebrations with a part of the UK which is close to our hearts – in particular it will be the highlight of my assignment piloting the ship in to the centre of Newcastle.”

Sailors from the ship will attend local events celebrating the Platinum Jubilee and host local dignitaries on board, building on the ship’s strong bonds to the North East.
