The Royal Navy take the Varsity lead

Storyline: NavyFit

The Royal Navy went head to head with The University of Portsmouth in the annual Varsity tournament last week.

The event saw 315 people from the Navy and the University compete in events across 9 different sports including, fencing, swimming, volleyball, and football.

The Varsity tournament aims to showcase Royal Navy sport while providing an opportunity for university students to see what is available to them on their own doorstep.

Sports Development Assistant, Jen Wells helped to organise the event and commented, ‘Everyone conducted themselves in such a manner that the university fed back on the hospitality, and good sporting competition in all events. They felt that it was a great opportunity for development teams who do not usually get a huge number of fixtures to have the chance to compete.

‘It was great to see some closely contested fixtures, but the overall outcome was that the Royal Navy came away with a 9-2 win! A fantastic effort all round.’

The inaugural Varsity competition in 2023 saw the two sides draw, so this year’s win puts the Navy in the lead ahead of next year’s event.
