The 2017 Silver Employer Recognition Awards Ceremony took place on the 6th of September 2017 on the historic ship HMS Victory in Portsmouth.

Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire Nigel Atkinson presented Silver awards to 20 businesses at the prestigious event to recognise their support to the Armed Forces’ Community.

The Naval Secretary and Flag Officer (Reserves), Rear Admiral Simon Williams CB CVO launched the event which was followed by speeches from Reservist Petty Officer Naval Nurse Denise Wright from HMS King Alfred and Reservist employer Jim Weeden from Arqiva.

Mark Smith from Mainstream Group Ltd said:  “The Employer Recognition Scheme is important to our group as a demonstration to both veterans and reservists of the high value we place on their transferable skills, which directly benefit our business.  I am absolutely delighted that we have received the Silver Award today.”

The Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) encourages employers to support defence and inspire others to do the same. The scheme encompasses Bronze, Silver and Gold awards for employer organisations that pledge, demonstrate or advocate support to defence and the Armed Forces Community, and align their values with the Armed Forces Covenant.

Colonel (Retired) Patrick Crowley South East Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association Chief Executive said: “These companies have gone the extra mile to support the Armed Forces and particularly the Reserves and service leavers.

"We are very fortunate to have HM Lord-Lieutenant Nigel Atkinson to present the awards, but the most important people here this evening are the employers receiving their awards, highlighting their commitment to supporting both their employees and our Armed Forces.”

The Army Medical Services Quartet played upon the quarterdeck of the ship, whilst Brigadier Bill O’Leary welcomed guests and VIP’S.

The evening culminated with The Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas performing the Beating of the Retreat and the Salute was taken by Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire and the Naval Secretary, Rear Admiral Simon Williams.
