Marine Engineers number one on HMS Montrose

Six Marine Engineers on-board HMS Montrose have been awarded their certificates of competence and promotion to Marine Engineer First Class.

The Engineers who form part of the 40 strong Marine Engineering team on board the Type 23 Frigate based in Plymouth, have spent the last six months on-board putting to use the skills they have learnt at HMS Sultan in Gosport, the home of their 30 week Marine Engineering Course.

Although a key milestone has been achieved on-board in the start of their career reaching Operational Performance Standard (OPS), they will now undergo a further six months of arduous and challenging on the job training before they will be able to undertake Sea Duty Watches.

ET(ME) Blair Sproat who joined the Ship in November 2017 said, “It seems an age ago that I was at HMS Sultan undergoing my trade training as an Engineer. To now be part of the Marine Engineering Team on-board HMS Montrose, not only putting my training to good use, but also to achieve my ET(ME) 1 award is a proud moment, and I am looking forward to further my training as an engineer especially whilst on our upcoming deployment.”

The Marine Engineering Branch on board HMS Montrose falls in line with the Year of Engineering 2018 Campaign.

The Year of Engineering is a government campaign which celebrates the world and wonder of engineering. It also forms an important part of the Industrial Strategy, which is committed to boosting engineering across the UK, ensuring everyone has the skills needed to thrive in a modern economy.

The Commanding Officer of HMS Montrose, Commander Conor O’Neill who presented the Engineers with their award also commented,

“Whether we are at sea or alongside the men and women of HMS Montrose’s Marine Engineering Department are always working hard to keep the lights on, engines running and systems functioning correctly.

“The young engineers promoted today have made a great contribution to the ship since they joined and should be very proud of their achievements.”
