HMS Collingwood staff help limbless veterans

Four members of Babcock staff based at HMS Collingwood will be enjoying some of the best views in London when they undertake a charity walk in aid of Blesma, the limbless veterans’ charity.

On 25th May, Sue Haigh, Nathan Stevenson and Mick Curtis from the Future Training Unit and Teresa Curtis from the Royal Naval Leadership Academy will walk across the roof of the O2 Arena in London which, at its highest point, is 52 metres above the ground.

Sue is no stranger to viewing landmarks from unusual angles as she has previously abseiled down Portsmouth’s Spinnaker Tower for charity.

She explained the reason for the team’s latest challenge, “I’ve already abseiled down the Spinnaker Tower, so we thought why not walk over the O2!

“We like to get involved with unusual events and do something different, especially if it’s for charity.”

The team will take about 90 minutes to traverse the 380m route across the roof of the iconic landmark and they hope for good weather to be able to enjoy the spectacular views as they walk.

They are raising money for Blesma, the charity that supports limbless and injured military veterans for life. It was founded just after the First World War when over 40,000 British men returned home having lost limbs.

Today it provides practical care, such as providing rehabilitation breaks for seriously injured personnel returning from war zones as well as advising government bodies on issues such as war pensions and the provision of prosthetic support to military veterans.
