Physical Training Instructor

Royal Navy School of Physical Training

The Royal Navy School of Physical Training is responsible for training Physical Training (PT) Branch personnel. They offer courses for PT Branch qualification, PDev Officer courses, and Sea Acquaint courses. They recruit PT Branch personnel from other branches within the Royal Navy or through direct entry.

Direct entry candidates undergo suitability assessments and training before joining the 26-week Leading Physical Trainers Qualifying Course.

This course covers academic and practical subjects such as instructional techniques, fitness principles, sports coaching, and adventurous training. Career courses for Chief Petty Officers and Petty Officers focus on both academic and physical aspects and include management skills. PDev Officers and Sea Acquaint courses are also provided.

What We Do Here

At HMS Temeraire, there are many great fitness facilities available. These include squash courts for playing a competitive sport, a large swimming pool for swimming, a special area with exercise machines for cardiovascular training, two gymnasiums for playing sports like netball, basketball, volleyball, and badminton, and even an outdoor tennis court. All military teams and their family members can use these facilities for free. Some other people, like Ministry of Defence staff and retired military personnel, can get special passes to use the facilities for a small fee.

Royal Navy Field Gun Competition

The Royal Navy Field Gun competition started in 1899 during the Boer War. Annual competitions at Portsmouth commemorate the heroic efforts of assembling, running, and disassembling a field gun. Teams from the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Army, and RAF compete for the prestigious Brickwoods Trophy. It showcases courage, discipline, teamwork, and leadership in the armed forces.
